  1. Some sources feel David may have the name Thomas as either a middle or first name. Some think his middle initial may be 'M'. However, his will has his name only as David Satterwhite.

I have received a correspondence from Dovie Kaupke, a long time Satterwhite researcher. The following is from her: (Quote) "According to documentation I have, David was born abt. 1766 - Census Records and title to first headright in GA. We know his wife's name was Rebecca, but there is absolutely no proof that it was Willingham. Also any papers that I have, never even gives a middle initial for David. He received a headright of 200 acres in 1787 in Richmond County, Georgia. This later became Columbia County. In order to complete a headright you had to live on it and improve it. He received only 200 acres, which is what a single person would receive. If he had been married, he would have received 50 acres more for each child and wife. David also served on the jury in Columbia County in 1797 which proves that he was living and a solid citizen of this county. He lived there until 1805." (End Quote).

I believe Dovie to be a credible source. Therefore I have removed the surname for Rebecca who married David Satterwhite. I agree with Dovie's research in the way that headrights were given. Because of this, I now wonder if Amy Anna, born 1785, may be linked to the wrong parents. David and Rebecca would have been married after 1787.

Since I have not been in the place to research our very earliest ancestors myself, I take no credit for the data on them.

David Mitchell Satterwhite was born in 1805 at Georgia. He married Ferbia Baldwin on 13 January 1825 at Jones County, Georgia; I have a copy of the recorded marriage license. To protect the original documents that were deteriorating, in 1937, a transcription was made from the book in which original license info was recorded. There were errors made in the process of transcribing. According to the marriage record, the marriage license was obtained a year prior to their marriage. The date of their marriage found in the online Jones County, Georgia marriage index is 8 May 1825. I cannot say with any certainty which is the correct date of their marriage. One needs to view the original document, and I am not sure they will allow that today. David Mitchell Satterwhite died after 1871 at Dade County, Georgia.

  1. Family legend has it that John first married a full-blood Cherokee. In his son, James's obituary, James's mother is listed as Hattie Virginia (Jones) Satterwhite. In my research, I have found nothing to document either the name or the Indian heritage. I do have an 1870 census with J. W. Satterwhite married to Martha J. I believe this Martha J. is the mother of James. Since James's mother died, when James was 2 years old, he had no memory of her. My hope is to find a marriage license for John and Martha. Since the 1870 census indicates she was born in Tennessee, they may have married there, or perhaps in Arkansas, after John migrated from Georgia to Arkansas. Without knowing Martha's maiden name, I am not able to document parents for her.

  1. The will of John Wilkerson, dated 21 May 1799, named a Francis Wilkerson as John's son. Tax lists, residency, militia muster rolls, Revolutionary War pension application and other documents identify Francis as the son of either John Wilkerson or David Wilkerson of Northwest Granville County, North Carolina. Francis was alive when David died and David's living children are named in his estate papers. Francis is not one of them which narrows the list of possible fathers for Francis to one name, John. Francis stayed in Granville when most of John's family moved to Georgia. Francis had married into one of the larger landholding families in the neighborhood. He was overseer of the road past his father-in-law's land, and was apparently pretty well established in Granville. He didn't buy his own land until almost 1800 when he acquired 331 acres near the present Granville-Vance county line. Around 1816, by then a widower, Francis moved to Kentucky with Joseph, his oldest son, and some of his other children. Revolutionary War Service: Francis Wilkerson was about 17 when he enlisted in the North Carolina Continental Line, Army of the United States, in the early spring of 1778. He was sent to Virginia for training. The Army was just recovering from the terrible winter at Valley Forge. It had almost no money. Some officers were paying and feeding their troops out of their own pockets. Since neither the British nor the Americans seemed to have plans for campaigns in the north during 1778, Francis was sent home on furlough after he finished training. Some time after he returned to Granville it became obvious the British were going to move the war to the southern states. They captured Savannah and Augusta Georgia, and were preparing to march across South Carolina to Charleston. Francis was called back to duty. Francis rejoined the Army in Hillsborough, North Carolina, then marched across North and South Carolina to near Augusta, Georgia where he took part in his only major battle. On 3 March 1779 the British defeated the Americans at the Battle of briar Creek nearAugusta. Although the North Carolina militia was confused by British maneuvers and retreated in disorder, the North Carolina Continental Line, of which Francis was a member, fought well. Francis's enlistment expired before the American army left the vicinity of Augusta. He was discharged around 1 April 1779 and returned to Granville, having served 11 months on a nine month enlistment. (Maybe they didn't count the furlough time as service.) During the last half of 1779 the British bottled up the American Southern army, including the North Carolina Continental Line, in Charleston. With most of the Rebel soldiers gone, the Tories became active in North and South Carolina. Discharged Continentals and American officers on leave were pressed into service to clean out the Tories. Francis enlisted in this effort for three months, making his total length of service fourteen months.
